Record numbers for Munich airport

Munich airport has achieved an historical feat, with its best half-year results to date in terms of flights, passengers and cargo.

In the first six months of 2017, more than 21m passengers passed transited the airport, exceeding the threshold by 1m passengers. In fact, this number is equal to the full year’s passenger traffic figures for 1999 at Munich airport and represents a 6% growth in passenger traffic compared to the 2016, demonstrating enormous growth.

The number of take-offs and landings also increased significantly between January and June, growing by more than 4% to nearly 200,000 flight movements. Over the same period, airfreight volumes at the airport rose to an all-time high of some 180,000 tonnes, equating to a 9% year-on-year increase in cargo turnover.

Munich airport’s President and CEO, Michael Kerkloh, remarked on the impressive growth. "Today, 25 years after it opened, Munich airport is indeed looking stronger than ever before," he said. "With the foreseeable increases in intercontinental traffic, our high-quality airport will attain a new standard of quality in the coming years. We will then be equally well positioned as a hub across all traffic segments," he concluded.
