Strong growth in passenger traffic and the continuing boom in airfreight lifted the fortunes of Munich airport in 2015. A year-on-year increase in Group sales resulted in approximately €1.25bn. Based on preliminary figures, the FMG Group achieved total earnings after taxes of €135m.
Dr Michael Kerkloh, President and CEO of the airport, noted that it was not only FMG, the airport operating company, which benefited from this success. "This is the best result in the history of our company. It is also very good news for the neighbouring communities. They are going to receive about €35m in business taxes for 2015, some €7m more than in 2014." In addition, there was a €10m increase in EBITDA, which reached €490m. Cashflow also improved by €34m to a total of €460m.
A total of 41m travellers used Munich airport as a starting point, a destination or a stop-over in 2015. This represented an increase of 1.3m passengers, or 3.2%, as compared with the previous year. A main reason for this was the further expansion of the attractive route network. Indeed, the number of airlines offering scheduled services in Munich increased from 91 to 97. At the same time, seven new destinations were added, bringing the total to 247, and flights were available to 70 different countries, which was two more than in 2014.
Growth in airfreight was even more dynamic than in the passenger segment in 2015. Cargo tonnages were up by about 9% to a new record level of over 336,000 tonnes. The number of aircraft movements increased by about 1% to approximately 380,000.
In a month's time the new satellite terminal will be opened, which will also mark the start of a further stage of development for airport.
