The consequences of tyre damage and the resulting vehicle breakdown can be enormous: high costs for fleet managers and significant problems in the supply chain are just a two of them. However, Continental Commercial Specialty Tires has come up with a remedy: the division has unveiled the proven Continental tyre pressure monitoring system ContiPressureCheck for specialty tyres. This innovative technology is reliable and actually prolongs the tyre's useful lifetime. A tyre pressure monitoring system can be mounted on almost all types of industrial vehicle and an advantage is that the system works with pneumatic tyres from all tyre manufacturers
In contrast with comparable systems, the ContiPressureCheck is deployed inside the tyre. If the inflation pressure decreases, the tyre can be subjected to greater stress as it rolls, causing it to heat up. Heavy loads, as they occur in port logistics or aviation sectors, have the effect of increasing the loading quite considerably. This can damage the tyre or, in a worst case scenario, lead to a blow-out.
ContiPressureCheck makes use of a sensor inside the tyre to continuously monitor the inflation pressure and tyre temperature to prevent this from happening. The sensors and a communication and processing system are integrated with a module fitted with a rubber container to the inner surface of the tyre. In this way, more accurate results can be achieved than with comparable systems that collect data with sensors outside the tyre. In such instances, measuring errors can occur through heat radiated from the brakes. In the Continental application, the data is sent by wireless transmission to the central receiver, which processes the data and sends it directly to the display in the driver's cab. The difference between the stipulated and actual tyre pressures shows the driver immediately when to restore the correct tyre pressure, and thereby avoids any potential problem.
