Manchester airport, in the UK, has opted for a green initiative by participating in a four week demonstration of GSE that has been designed to reduce its carbon footprint.

Working with Swissport, Terberg, Charlatte and Posicharge, in conjunction with Thomson Airways, the airport’s environmental team fielded a pushback, beltloader and cargo tractor, all of which are running on batteries. Citing concerns over the levels of pollution surrounding the turnaround process, the airport authority confirmed its aim of improving the environment, to aid both its staff and its customers. A rapid charging point from Posicharge has speeded up the recharging process and now just two hours are required: this endows the vehicles with enough power to last several days. The scheme is just one part of the airport’s £1bn transformation programme.
