Henceforth, all vehicles that are not yet electric will be refuelled with synthetic diesel. This is produced from residual and waste material, as well as vegetable oil from certified sustainable cultivations. For the airport, the change will pay off twice: compared to fossil-based diesel, synthetic fuel reduces CO2 emissions by about 70%, while emitting significantly less pollutants when burned. Overall, about 30% less fine dust is produced while driving. This conversion to synthetic diesel will not only protect the environment but also Stuttgart airport’s apron staff.
The synthetic diesel will thus be a complementary product for the GSE fleet, and can be viewed,in fact, as a transit stage to e-mobility, where this is feasible. However, sometimes there is no available alternative on the market: such is the case with airport-specific special purpose vehicles, like the airport's fire department units or winter service equipment.
