OMEGA, or the Ops Monitor and Efficiency Gap Analyser, is a tool that uses big data collected during cargo flights to make future flights more efficient. By comparing projected, actual and optimal values, it provides key information for reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
The software, developed by software specialist Aviaso together with Lufthansa, enables pilots to optimally prepare for a flight and identify any deviations from the plan early on.
Award winners were announced at the DQS Sustainability Conference 2017 on May 17 in Düsseldorf. Bettina Jansen, Head of Environmental Management for Lufthansa Cargo, said the carrier was delighted to receive the award for OMEGA, just one of its various measures aimed at improving the ecological efficiency of flight operations.
“Lufthansa Cargo has set itself ambitious goals in the field of climate and environmental responsibility,” Jansen commented.
By 2020, Lufthansa Cargo hopes to reduce specific carbon emissions by 25% based on the level for 2005.
