Iberia's 1st pushback for a Bombardier CRJ

Iberia Airport Services has pushed back a Bombardier CRJ using a Mototok at Madrid Airport for the first time.

The Air Nostrum CRJ-1000, flight number IB 8698, was pushed back on Tuesday 1 February after six months of planning with Air Nostrum and Mototok.

With its fleet located in one area of Madrid airport, IBAS says it can do more than 12 pushbacks a day with the Mototoks. For the CRJ-1000, a Mototok T7000 was used, which is also compatible with -200, -700, and -900 models.

The T7000 was designed specifically for CRJs, and though the SPACER8600 could be modified for CRJs, it would need modifications in the paddle to catch the nose wheel without damaging the back part of the landing gear.

“Mototok is working on this adjustment, we are also interested in this development to increase the utilisation of SPACER8600 we already have in Madrid for the CRJ fleet,” said IBAS.

For staff, the training is the same as for the SPACER8600, which is designed for Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s, and the manoeuvre only needs to be adjusted to the parking area on the apron and to the airline’s specific procedures.

The partners aim to use Mototoks for as many pushbacks as possible. IBAS can handle up to 12 turns per day and parking.

If one Mototok serves two stands and the agent is trained, IBAS says 20 aircraft per day is possible.

IBAS said: “The percentage depends on the number of Mototok we purchase. We would like to handle 100% of Air Nostrum aircraft in this area just with Mototoks by summer 2023.”
