dnata acquires US airport handler

Emirates’ dnata has reportedly acquired a 100% stake in US airport ground handling company, Ground Services International, with further plans to advance into the North American market.

GSI provides ground handling services to international carriers and cargo operators in 14 different cities across the US. Last month, dnata's full acquisition of GSI was completed and has now been confirmed.

Confirmation came from Gary Chapman, Chief Operating Officer for dnata, who added that the move is hoped to act as a springboard for the company in North America. “We also see it as a launching pad for the whole of North America, which means Canada, and potentially Mexico,” he explained. No financial details have been disclosed.

This news comes after dnata’s recent announcement that is had signed a new partnership deal with Scandinavian Airlines. Under the terms of this co-operation, the handler will provide ground handling and cargo services at Zurich airport and Geneva airport.

In the wake of these consecutive successes, it is not surprising to learn that dnata reported that 2015 had been its most profitable year since the company’s inception, with revenue and profit up 16% to Dhs 10.6bn and Dhs 1.1bn, respectively.

Acquisitions made last year include investments in operators in Australia, Brazil, The Netherlands and Italy, bringing the company’s grand total of operations to 79 airports worldwide, where it provides ground handling, cargo, travel and flight catering services.
