AAI issues tender for air cargo centre at Surat airport

Cargo Matters
The Airports Authority of India has issued a tender for the construction of a state-of-the-art cargo terminal at Surat airport in the Western state of Gujarat.

Approval was given in October for the development project, with a prescribed budget of Rs 10.37 crore, and the tender process is likely to be completed by December 26, an AAI official has said. “The construction work for the cargo terminal will start as soon as the contract would be given after the tender process," informed Airport Director, Pramod Thakre.

The 1,000 square metre facility will be a two-storey, steel-based structure located between Air Traffic Control and the terminal building, complete with cold storage capabilities for perishable cargo. As cargo operations at the airport grow, so the building will be gradually expanded in phases, reports have said.

Until now, cargo facilities have not been constructed at Surat airport, reportedly due to a lack of air connectivity from Surat airport and Mumbai.
