Ghana Air Cargo Centre inaugurated at Kotoka International airport

Kotoka International airport’s multi-million dollar cargo facility has been officially inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama, cementing Accra as a major air cargo hub.

A joint venture between Air Ghana and the Ghana Airports Company, the 17,000 square metre facility combines 8,000 square metres of dedicated warehouse with 9,000 square metres of office space, and is managed by Swissport Ghana, a joint venture company between Swissport International and the GACC.

The GACC will increase cargo handling capacity at the airport from 50,000 tonnes a year to more than 70,000 tonnes annually. The facility includes two large cold stores, a bullion store, X-ray scanners and 24-hour CCTV cameras, as well as a transit area where aircraft can unload freight for onward shipment to smaller freight centres in West and Central Africa.

President John Dramani Mahama, who inaugurated the centre, said that the development cemented Ghana as the aviation hub of West Africa and that the operations of the facility would have a positive impact on the local economy. Mahama added that, together with similar initiatives at other airports in the region, the centre would serve to that boost domestic air travel and provide a major source of much needed employment opportunities.

The Managing Director of the GACC, Christian Zweifel, argued that the facility is “definitely the best in Africa and arguably one of the best in the world”, also reiterating the boost it will offer to the Ghanaian economy.
