Biju Patnaik International airport to begin international cargo operations

It was announced yesterday that the Airports Authority of India has approved the initiation of international cargo handling operations from Biju Patnaik International airport, to commence January 27.

A building beside the existing domestic air cargo terminal has already been reserved by the AAI to become the international air cargo terminal, according to Customs Commissioner Deepak Arora.

Secretary of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, LN Gupta, said that the move will respond to the continued call for hassle-free exports of goods to foreign countries by exporters in the region. The exporters themselves have reportedly commented that the new cargo terminal at the airport will be highly beneficial to the growth of various export trades, like seafood, agricultural exporters and handicraft exporters, and will provide them with a valuable alternative to the current practice of exporting their goods via road to the more distant Hyderabad and Kolkata airports.

A schedule for freighter routes to various international destinations in the Middle East, Far East and European countries is to be published shortly. Representatives of airlines including Indigo, Vistara, and Air India have been asked to publish the schedule, for both perishable and non-perishable items, within seven days.
