As part of a 33-year lease agreement between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and cargo property developer, Aeroterm, the project will see a US$70m cargo facility constructed and US$62.2m invested in upgrades to two taxiways to accommodate larger cargo aircraft.
The new 346,000 square foo cargo facility will be occupied and operated by Worldwide Flight Services and its airline partners.
Future plans of the development programme include upgrading and expanding the cargo facility on the airport's north side, repositioning cargo operations for better road access and phasing out underused warehouses.
“The project serves as a critical first step in revitalising JFK's air cargo sector,” remarked Erin Gruver, Aeroterm's Chief Development Officer.
