The airport is looking to save on both power and water through innovative and green technologies. To begin with, the terminal building will be 20% more efficient in terms of power usage once it becomes operational. Such a level of energy efficiency is expected to culminate in a savings on power corresponding to the annual consumption of 19,000 households, with a reduction to the order of 30,700 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Its water supply and usage have also come in for examination. According to the authorities, rainwater, recycled water and grey water will be used in response to the terminal building’s own needs. This will equate to a saving of 1.5m cubic metres of water per year, which equals the annual water consumption of 5,500 households.
Finally, the new airport's runway design has taken into account the distance between runways, the location of the terminal building, the taxiways and the runway layout in order to minimise fuel consumption and reduce unnecessary flight time for carriers.
