Lufthansa Cargo announces expansion of Frankfurt Cool Center

Lufthansa Cargo plans to significantly expand the Cool Center located at its Frankfurt airport base.

Dr Alexis von Hoensbroech, Lufthansa Cargo Board Member Product & Sales, said that the decision came following five years of successful operations at the facility and the continuous growth in the volume of temperature-sensitive cargo. “We want more,” he said. “That is why we intend to further upgrade and significantly expand our Cool Center in the coming year.”

The 4,500 square foot cold facility is already Europe’s largest airline hub for temperature-sensitive cargo. It took six months to construct, before opening in December 2011, and features a deep freeze room as well as four cold storage rooms that each maintain a different controlled temperature.

Following a 3,500 square metre extension, the newly expanded facility will total approximately 8,000 square metres in size. With construction due to commence in February 2017, it is anticipated that the development will be complete towards the end of summer next year.

In addition to increased square footage, the infrastructure of the Cool Center will also be upgraded. Since summer 2016, Lufthansa Cargo has also been offering its customers maximum transparency with its Cool Control Tower monitoring solutions for temperature-sensitive goods and the airline has stressed the importance of meeting its customers’ needs in the developing area of sensitive freight. Of Lufthansa’s growing customer base, von Hoensbroech remarked: “We want to be their first choice in the future as well.”

This announced follows the recent news that Lufthansa Cargo and its Cool Center had been awarded CEIV certification by IATA.
