These new buses will replace older, diesel-operated versions, and provide transportation for guests travelling between terminals and gates on Los Angeles International's airfields. They will also provide guests with a quieter ride and pollution-free emissions. The airport authority is furthermore anticipating reduced maintenance costs. The tender was won by manufacturer BYD.
As is well known, electric buses provide substantial environmental benefits, which align with BOAC-approved updates to the LAX Alternative Fuel Vehicle Requirement, previously approved in October 2017. The updated AFV requirement will allow the authority to take advantage of evolving technological developments in clean vehicles, which includes electric power.
Los Angeles’ current airfield bus fleet comprises 26 buses: 14 are diesel-fuelled buses that are over 20 years old, which work alongside 12 CNG-fuelled examples that are over ten years old.
