The company's Fuel Sense programme and aircraft fleet modernisation are believed to be responsible for the savings, with more than 330m gallons of jet fuel spared as a consequence of 46 different environmental initiatives, dating back to 2007. FedEx aims to reduce its aircraft emission intensity by 30% by 2020, so far achieving a 21.4% cut. At its World Hub in Memphis, FedEx has just added 15 zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell powered GSE cargo tractors, funded by a US$2.5m grant from the US Department of Energy.
Total fuel use by FedEx's fleet of over 650 aircraft dropped by 34.4m gallons last year compared to 2013 and emissions from this fuel amounted to 10.5m tonnes, compared with 10.8m in 2013, and 11.1m in 2012. So far, it is estimated that the Fuel Sense team has saved 334m gallons of jet fuel since its launch in 2007, preventing 3.25m tonnes of carbon emissions.
