In the light of the International Transport Forum's estimation that CO2 emissions from freight will grow by 290% by 2050, with cargo volumes reaching as much as 767m tonnes, these objectives are very pertinent ones. ITF also predicted that freight will overtake passenger traffic (as surface transport) as the main source of CO2 emissions by 2050. Air transport currently represents 2 % of global carbon emissions; however, according to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, these are expected to increase 3% by 2050. Despite the relatively low emissions contributed by air travel, the effect of CO2 emissions from aircraft is two to three times higher than the equivalent ground emissions because the CO2 is released at high altitudes, which is more harmful to the atmosphere.

Air cargo CO2 emissions predicted to increase
IATA has set new goals for the environmental sustainability of air cargo, including carbon-neutrality in air-freight growth by 2020 and a 50% reduction in net emissions by 2050.
