DHL expands footprint in California to meet e-commerce needs

International express services provider DHL has relocated its Ontario service centre in California to a larger, US$7M facility to accommodate the increased growth in international trade as a result of growth in e-commerce.

The new service centre, located near Ontario International Airport provides a total of 75,000 square feet of building space, compared with the previous footprint of a little over 39,000 square feet. Of the 75,000 square feet, 5,600 square feet comprise office space.

Air cargo moving through the Ontario airport reportedly grew by more than 15% in 2017, compared with the previous year. The additional dock doors and two conveyor belts at the new facility, capable of processing up to 3,000 pieces per hour, mean that the number of items that can be unloaded into the facility will double.

"DHL's expansion in Ontario is a direct reflection of our customers' business growth, which has been bolstered by an uptick in international shipping, largely due to the rise of e-commerce," commented General Manager for DHL, Western US, John Fox. "This strategic investment ensures our ability to meet the demands of local small and medium-sized businesses, while further supporting the development of global trade."
