Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa Cargo sign joint network agreement

Lufthansa Cargo and Cathay Pacific have signed an agreement to provide a joint network of routes between Hong Kong and Europe.

The “highly integrated bilateral co-operation,” as Lufthansa has called it, will see the two carriers provide 140 flights a week to 13 European destinations, bringing the two regions closer together. In addition to offering these routes, going forward, the airlines plan to collaborate closely on network planning, sales, IT and ground handling.

It is hoped that the Frankfurt-based co-operation will enhance the service provided for customers, enabling them access to the entire joint network via both airlines’ booking systems. In addition, joint handling, initially at the Hong Kong and Frankfurt hubs, will streamline the process for customers as there will be just one point for export drop off and import delivery.

The agreement was signed by Peter Gerber, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa, and Simon Large, Director of Cargo, Cathay Pacific. Peter was positive about the new co-operation, commenting: “By joining forces, customers gain access to unique flexibility with more flights to choose from and a combination of feeder and direct flights. In this way their cargo can reach its destination hours earlier. We will also have more options for shipments which have to be transported by freighter due to their size or properties.”

For both carriers, the first consignments to be sent according to the framework of the new co-operation will be early next year; initially from Hong Kong to Europe, to be followed by a Europe to Hong Kong route later on in the year.
