Until now, airport VIP lounges in the US have been dedicated to specific carriers, allowing only their own passengers to delight in their luxury. The US$2m "Escape Lounge", as it will be called, is to be a "carrier-less" retreat offering complimentary food and beverages, wi-fi and reading materials. As for the USP at MSP, the lounge will be open to anyone willing to pay the entry charge.
Marketing Strategist for the Metropolitan Airports Commission, Phoebe Larson, commented on the development: "This is a new concept in North America. It will accommodate both business passengers and families, with areas specifically to accommodate children where they can cut loose."
An American subsidiary of the London-based Manchester Airport Group will lead the development and act as operator for the construction, which will take place in Terminal 1 of MSP in a 5,000 square foot area above the northern stretch of Concourse E.
Cost of entry for the lounge has not yet been decided; however, Manchester Airport Group charges around US$30 for adult admission to its lounge areas in the UK, and US$23 for children. The Escape Lounge is anticipated to open at some point between late 2015 and early 2016.
