WFS expands at Heathrow as volumes soar

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) is expanding at Heathrow Airport by signing a 5-year lease on another building in the cargo area as volumes grow at double-digit rates.

The 5-year lease on Building 578 will boost warehouse and office space by 27,000 square feet and is due to commence operations in October.

It features 8 landside doors for cargo deliveries and collections, a 20-foot truck dock, and caster deck storage for loaded pallets and containers.

WFS plans to install a 7,000 square-foot area for ambient shipments and dedicated storage for temperature-controlled cargo requiring a 2-8C environment.

At Heathrow, WFS’ volumes have increased 30% in the last year, and once the new facility opens, its total handling space will be nearly 350,000 square feet.

Paul Carmody, Managing Director – UK Cargo for WFS, said: “After strong growth in our tonnage throughput in 2021, and with cargo volumes expected to increase by a further 25% this year, it’s important that we are proactive in ensuring we have the capacity and infrastructure our current airline customers need to support their products and services.

“A key focus for Building 578 is to expand our perishables handling capabilities. This investment also gives us more space to welcome new carriers, which we expect to do by the end of the year.”
