Royal Jordanian looking to go digital

Royal Jordanian Airlines has teamed up with CHAMP Cargosystems on a system that enables cargo agents to create electronic air waybills when making airfreight bookings.

In addition to streamlining air cargo tracking and booking capabilities, the e-AWB system developed by Royal Jordanian and CHAMP integrates with a platform used by the Jordanian Customs Department and other parties, thereby accelerating the clearance of goods and delivery to the consignee.

Royal Jordanian's President and Chief Executive, Suleiman Obeidat, said that he anticipated that the system would help attract a higher volume of cargo on Royal Jordanian aircraft. He noted that the 24-hour, self-service application would allow cargo agents to check flight schedules and capacity, as well as create real-time bookings and manage bookings without assistance.

The e-AWB programme is an IATA initiative to encourage its members to digitize the air waybill process and institutionalise accuracy, confidentiality and efficiency in a market that remains overly reliant on paper air waybills. IATA's goal of 56% implementation for 2016 fell short (the adoption rate currently stands at 48.9%); the 2017 target is set at 62%.
