The leak was found at the airport's cargo handling terminal in a consignment of sodium iodide 131 - a radioactive liquid used in medicine such as for the treatment of hyperthyroidism and some cancers.
The shipment arrived as bellyhold cargo on a Turkish Airlines passenger flight from Istanbul and, according to the airline, it was then examined by the official authorities in Delhi because of a suspicious leakage coming from the consignment. The leak was deemed not to be a risk to passengers, however.
"This area is far away from any of the passenger terminals and there is absolutely no risk of exposure to any passengers," Delhi International airport said in a statement, adding: "The said area has been cordoned off and as per the preliminary assessment... the material has been termed as that of low radioactivity."
In response to the situation, Turkish Airlines' cargo and technical teams put the necessary controls and radiological surveys into action on board the aircraft on their return to Istanbul but found no additional evidence relating to the issue.
