Qantas examines its bottom line

Handling Talk
Faced with falling returns, Qantas continues to modify its modus operandi.

The group's CEO, Alan Joyce, speaking at the carrier's recent AGM, said that the carrier was moving away from providing contract ground handling, catering and engineering services for international carriers where it cannot provide a profit. He went on to say that while the airline had lost some of its third party contracts, he also explained the reason: "(it) is (because) we were effectively subsidising our competitive airlines by providing services below the cost of providing them."

He added: "That was a crazy thing to do. Unless we can provide those services and make a profit, we're not going to them."
