The boost in volumes was attributed to combination of existing customers as well as some new clients, according to the airport. It is hoped that the Air Cargo Europe show in Munich in this week will attract yet more business to the airport from the freight sector.
Sales Director John Kohlsaat commented: “We had a very good start to the year, but of course we are constantly willing to improve.”
Kohlsaat added that Frankfurt-Hahn airport’s advantages include the continued availability of night flights (in contrast to the main Frankfurt airport), fast ground handling and short distances from cargo sheds to the airport apron.
Airport staff recently gained qualifications to handle live animals, in accordance with the IATA and EU regulations. Senior VP Cargo Sales and Business Development, Roger Scheifele, commented. “We seek to expand this business segment. The demand is strong and we would like to offer our clients maximum quality.”
Scheifele went on to say that the airport has already successfully handled a number of live animal shipments, including the export of 85 horses on a B747 freighter.
