Hong Kong airport has had a positive start to the year, with a 1.5% surge in freight volumes recorded for January, as figures rose to 361,000 tonnes.

According to Hong Kong International airport, the increase has been attributed in the main to a 3% year-on-year growth in both exports and transhipments.
“During the month, cargo throughput to/from key trading regions in Australasia and Europe grew most significantly compared to other key regions,” said a spokesperson on behalf of the airport, which last year was the global number one freight airport despite reporting a full year cargo increase of just 0.1%, to 4.4m tonnes.
