Passenger and Livewel handler detained for smuggling gold at Mumbai airport

In the early hours of April 7, the Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs arrested an arrival passenger on suspicion of smuggling gold into the city.

The criminal, later named as Mohammed Shammaz Armar, was seen to be stashing gold in a restroom near the transit hold area in Terminal 2 of Mumbai airport. At around 0120 in the morning the AIU intercepted the Indian man, who was caught carrying approximately 2.2 kilogrammes of gold, worth Rs. 59,76,124.

Following his capture, Mohammed, who had flown from Dubai on low-cost carrier IndiGo, admitted to his crime, implicating a staff member from ground handling agent Livewel as complicit in the plan.

Accomplice Sandeep Phalke, as he was named, was to retrieve the gold from its hiding place in the washroom. Sandeep, who was working overtime at the time of the offence, was detained by the AIU and later disclosed the name of fellow Livewel employee, Nokonha Johnson, who may also have had a part in the plan.
