Parked up GSE advice from Charlatte

GSE Focus
Many companies are now mothballing their GSE because of the coronavirus problem.

Charlatte has published some advice for those whose GSE operations are winding down.

Ensure that all inching and feeding devices are turned off or securely isolated. This is especially important for machines stored outdoors. Ensure that all doors, windows and vents are closed and secured.

Undertake a complete greasing schedule as per the technical manual before the GSE is stored to prevent seizure through rust intrusion in the various joints of the systems. Make sure that the fluid levels are correct, depending on the machine's requirements: this includes brake fluid, hydraulic system reservoirs, lubricants and coolant. Whenever possible, it is better to lock the machine with blocks rather than applying the parking brake, to prevent seizure or sticking through a long period of storage.

Check the machine for leaks and repair if necessary. Empty air pressurised tanks, if applicable. For tyres there are two options: Inflate tyres to maximum recommended pressure and, if possible, move machines from 30 to 40 centimetres once a week, to avoid the formation of flat spots on the tyres. This also applies to machines with solid tyres. Alternatively, put the machine on chocks to relieve the tyres. To do so, the machine must be parked on stable and horizontal ground. Positions and characteristics of the supports must comply with the information in the machine's technical manual. The pressure in the tyres can then be reduced.

Fore thermic-engined GSE: disconnect the battery after performing the general recommendations. Check the compatibility of the minimum acceptable coolant temperature. For electric GSE: check that the electrical compartments are tightly sealed and that the storage room is well ventilated to prevent the accumulation of moisture. Batteries must be disconnected from machines. For acid batteries, these should be charged, if possible with an equalising charge session before being stored. Ensure that there is a charging session once every month. For customers using chargers with compensations, leave the chargers connected to the batteries. Programmed charging sessions will be automatically and regularly effected. Adjust electrolyte level after the charging session by adding water, if necessary. For lithium batteries, refer to the battery manufacturer’s recommendations. In most cases there is the possibility of deactivating and cutting the electronic feed to a battery.
