The new facility will give Munich airport 27 new gate positions and increase the capacity of Terminal 2, which is used by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners, by 11m passengers to 36m passengers per year. The 60:40 collaborative effort between Munich airport and Lufthansa will offer passengers a wide range of shopping and dining options, as well as quiet areas with reclining chairs, play areas for children and free access to the airport-wide Wi-Fi network, all in a spacious, 7,000 square meter setting.
Along with the provision of five Lufthansa lounges, travellers can enjoy the likes of a roof terrace, panoramic windows and a bar overlooking the airport apron. The terminal also sets new standards for environmentally friendly operations and energy efficiency. Advanced building materials and innovative heating, cooling and lighting technologies contribute to reduced energy consumption and a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions.
Total expenditures on satellite terminal amount to about €900m including the new building, the expansion of the baggage sorting facility and the construction work on the ramps and taxiways near the terminal. Construction of the building itself was completed last autumn, followed by the operational testing phase, involving trials of more than 3,000 participants playing the role of passengers.
On April 22, 1900 people from Germany and other parts of the world gathered for the grand opening ceremony, to celebrate the upcoming launch of the new terminal.
