This number amounts to more than 45% of the company’s total workforce and therefore constitutes a first of its scale for the regional aviation industry. The promotions were approved by the Board of Directors and announced over the weekend, as part of NAHCO’s staff improvement programmes.
Against a background of economic recession, the decision demonstrates the importance that the company places on its staff. In a statement announcing the promotions, the departing Acting CEO, Folashade Ode, said that the promotion exercise was based on well-defined criteria that ensure fairness and transparency, emphasising the company’s commitment to maintain a happy and motivated workforce.
“A more transparent, performance-driven reward and compensation system will be put in place to improve our overall service quality with positive impact on our revenue and profitability,” she said, according to a statement issued by the company.
The current promotion exercise follows about two years on from when the company promoted 390 staff, in September 2015. NAHCO was praised by other aviation stakeholders for this initiative, with other operators in the industry urged to emulate NAHCO’s commendable welfare policies.
In July this year, the company also increased salaries, with some staff getting as much as a 15% pay rise.
Idris Yakubu is to take over from Ode as CEO of NAHCO on November 20, 2017. Ode was appointed in an acting capacity following the exit of Norbert Bielderman on August 31 this year. Yakubu joins NAHCO with a vast wealth of experience, spanning 28 years in financial management, leadership, strategy, business development, organisational change and business renewal.
