Owing to sustained growth in the global airfreight industry, and the saturation of Amsterdam airport, Liege airport has prioritised the expansion of its storage space in 2018. The first €20m investment will see the addition of 20,000 square metres of warehouses: a 30% increase in the airport’s cargo handling capacity.
The first of these new warehouses, measuring 6,000 square metres, will become available this month, with subsequent warehouses expected to be operational by the end of 2018.
The additional budget added in December came as a result of the decision to add four new parking areas for large aircrafts, taking total investments in cargo to more than €50m, with some 300 jobs to be created as a result of the developments.
“The increase in volume we have seen in 2017 shows no sign of slowing down in 2018. We need to anticipate this growth and speed up the development plan we had in place,” commented Luc Partoune, CEO of Liege airport.
The new aircraft parking areas will be operational in 2019, and fall within the airport’s Flexpress service, which prioritises cargo.
Liege airport experienced a record year in 2017, with more than 700,000 tonnes of cargo handled.
