Grounds for optimism?

Coffee drinking is big business - and it can be a sustainable one, too.

Faced with the growing interest in matters environmental, Frankfurt airport has decided to rethink the concept of the coffee cup.

Today, drinkers at its restaurants have the choice of using a disposable cup - or using their own cup. To encourage the consumer, restaurant owners have decided to reward those who opt to bring their own cups with a small discount on the cost of the beverage. In line with the initiative Fraport, the airport’s operator, has now introduced stylish bamboo mugs boasting an airport-themed design.

About 25,000 hot beverages are passed across the counters of Frankfurt airport’s restaurants and cafés every day. Quite often customers, who are usually in a hurry, order their coffee or tea to drink elsewhere. In order to sustainably decrease the usage of disposable cups, restaurant owners from both terminals have come together in an agreement and are offering an incentive to those patrons who bring their own cup.

And for those not seeking a physical discount, passengers, guests and airport staff can donate the money saved to an environmental group, thus doing good for the environment in a twofold way.
