Etihad cargo goes up 17% in 2014

Cargo Matters
Etihad Airways flew a total of 569,000 tonnes of freight and mail in 2014, yielding a 17% year-on-year increase in cargo carriage, and accounting for 89.6% of cargo imports, exports and transfers at Abu Dhabi airport.

A spokesperson for the airline said: "Over the course of last year, Etihad Cargo enhanced its global reach by offering bellyhold capacity on Etihad Airways' ten new passenger destinations and expanding its freighter services to new markets such as Dar es Salaam, Entebbe, Hanoi and Moscow. A freighter service was also launched from Milan to Bogotá and from Bogotá to Amsterdam, following an agreement with Avianca Cargo, the cargo division of Latin American carrier Avianca."

Etihad's passenger and cargo fleet consisted of 110 aircraft at the end of 2014, having gained an additional nine Airbus aircraft and six Boeing aircraft during the year, while further leased capacity was also added. Etihad's passenger count for 2014 rose significantly by 23% on 2013 numbers, totalling around 14.8m passengers. Despite all its new aircraft, the surge in passenger demand continued to exceed the airline's capacity increase, indicating the strength of its long-term development strategy.

The President and Chief Executive of Etihad Airways said: "We enter 2015 as a stronger, more dynamic airline that will continue to enhance the growth of Abu Dhabi as one of the world's emerging aviation hubs."
