As of 2020, all power will be provided by Rotterdam-based energy provider, Eneco, with a deal being reached for the supply of 200 gigawatt hours of green energy, comparable with the consumption of 60,000 households, every year for 15 years. At this time, the energy will supply Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague airport, Eindhoven airport and Lelystad airport.
For the two years from 2018 before the wind farms become operational, the Schiphol Group will switch to existing sustainable sources available in the Netherlands. The first wind farm to generate power for Royal Schiphol Group will be Vianen, which will be up and running from January next year.
Jos Nijhuis, President and CEO of Royal Schiphol Group, commented on the development. “For our new energy contract, we wanted nothing but sustainable power generated in the Netherlands. After all, one thing is certain: aviation can and must be made more sustainable,” he remarked. “We feel that the most important elements of this collaboration with Eneco are that all the Schiphol Group airports are involved and that additional sustainable energy sources will be developed in the Netherlands. This will allow our airports to increase their sustainability and offer economic benefits,” Nijhuis concluded.
