Rotterdam The Hague Airport signed a collaboration agreement with a European consortium, led by EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft, allowing the consortium to study the production of sustainable kerosene obtained from CO2, water and electricity.
The parties to the agreement hope that the study will help them become the first to be able to offer sustainable kerosene obtained from the air to the aviation industry. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol supports the project, which it considers a major step forward towards carbon-dioxide neutral aviation. The study will focus on the development of a technology that will enable the production of kerosene from captured atmospheric carbon dioxide and solar energy. The process will involve a novel combination of several innovative but already proven techniques. Eventually, the study is expected to result in the construction of a small installation on the grounds of Rotterdam The Hague airport (part of the Royal Schiphol Group), which will be able to produce approximately 1,000 litres of sustainable kerosene per day.
