Aviator closes gender gap in ground services

Aviator Airport Alliance is working on closing the gender gap in the aviation sector with women making up almost a quarter of ramp staff in Gothenburg.

Aviation is a male-dominated sector with ICAO reporting that women made up 4.9% of licensed aviation personnel in 2021, according to its latest global survey.

Aviator, which provides services at 15 airports in the Nordics, is looking at the disparity and says 22% of ramp staff at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport in Sweden are women.

The share has risen over the years from 8% of new employees in 2020 being women to 33% last year.

Johannes Johansson, Manager Airside Operations at Aviator’s Gothenburg station, said: “Women are not only working in the frontline, but also in leadership positions as Coordinators, Loading Supervisors and Department Supervisors. Working in the industry and ramp handling since 2008, I see that a lot more women are interested in these careers today than before, which is very promising.”

Johansson says women are having a positive impact on team dynamics, saying, “We are happy that we have been able to reduce the gap between men and women, which for us has given us a better atmosphere in the team. We now not only have a better mix in terms of gender diversity, but also a healthy balance when it comes to background and age. The difference between our youngest colleague and oldest is 51 years!”
