AMI Cape Town expands perishables handling capacity

AMI, the world’s largest trade-only airfreight and express wholesaler, has doubled the size of its facility and trebled its temperature-controlled storage for perishables at its South African base.

AMI has acquired the facility adjacent to its current base at Cape Town International airport, taking its total warehouse space to 1000 square metres, including 120 square metres of cold storage, with separate temperature zones for flowers, and fruit and vegetables.

The extra space will afford AMI the capability to take delivery of fresh produce from South Africa’s Cape region and to prevent spoilage of the produce while it awaits transport by air.

Milton French, AMI’s VP Africa, said: “The expanded AMI Cape Town facility and our increased perishables capability will help us to keep pace with the significant growth in traffic from this region.”

AMI’s South African operations also operates from branches in Johannesburg and Durban as well as Cape Town. Durban has shown dramatic growth of 118% over the past 4 months, while AMI held a 6.9% share of the total South African airfreight market from January to August this year, and ranked third in the country’s airfreight agents’ league table.
