Accolade for Edmonton International

Edmonton International airport was declared the winner of the Balchen/Post Award for excellence in snow and ice control at the 53rd Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium.

This year's event was held in Buffalo, New York. This is the second time that the airport has won the award, the first occasion being in 2012. The award was presented to the airport’s Airside Operations Team for their dedicated efforts in maintaining the airport in a safe and operational manner during the 2018-2019 winter season. The station actually won the category of Medium Commercial Airport (100,000 to 200,000 operations per year).

The airport experiences a yearly average snowfall of 128.5 centimetres and more than 1,500,00 square metres of airside space, as well as more than 860,000 square metres landside, have to be kept clear in order to maintain a round-the-clock operation. The heavy equipment that is used is also severely tested under these conditions yet must still be maintained or repaired and kept operating to ensure a fluid operation.
