The new aircraft offers enhanced aerodynamics, and superior engine technology and fuel efficiency.
The first route to be flown will be Dallas Fort Worth to Beijing, then DFW to Buenos Aires, followed by DFW to Shanghai later on this month, from June 26. Chicago to Narita will begin from August 18.
President of AA Cargo, Jim Butler, said: "With the addition of the 787, we are able to more effectively utilise our growing network and continue in our efforts to expand our reach.
"The efficiency of the aircraft allows us to offer more air cargo opportunities, while simultaneously reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the customer experience."
The aircraft has higher aft and bulk doors for loading larger shipments, and can be used to transport perishables and pharmaceuticals, thanks to its capacity to carry up to 1,000 pounds of dry ice.
