The Canadian carrier has made some further cuts to its workforce because of the pandemic.
In all, some 250 staff are due to be laid off. In line with recent restrictions imposed on travel to Mexico and other southern destinations by the Canadian government, WestJet will initially trim 120 cabin crew on March 2, to be followed by 130 jobs that will come from customer service and ground staff roles in Manitoba. Flights to Mexico and the Caribbean, noted as key leisure destinations, will be suspended until April 30.
Third party handlers are being endorsed at certain stations: Airport Terminal Services has been selected to provide service at Winnipeg, with Strategic Aviation contracted at Brandon in Manitoba. In-house handling will continue at four other airports, including Toronto and Vancouver.
