Swissport celebrates 25 years of success in Kenya

Swissport International is celebrating its 25th anniversary of operating in Kenya, growing from just 27 employees to over 470.

Operations started in 1997, just 1 year after Swissport was incorporated, providing ramp and passenger services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

Services were added over the years, starting with aviation security in 1999, cargo handling in 2003, executive lounge hospitality, freighter ramp handling and apron bus services in 2015, centralised load control services in 2019, a centralised cargo office in 2020 and centralised finance in 2022.

Since starting operations quarter of a century ago, Swissport has grown to become the largest independent ground handling company in Kenya.

Racheal Ndegwa, Managing Director of Swissport in Kenya, said: “The growth of our business in Kenya is a reflection of the growth of our people. Swissport prioritises training and provides professional development pathways. This enables our staff to provide operational excellence and customer centric services.”

Sustainable operations are paramount, with Swissport investing in electric GSE in the cargo warehouse and solar panels on the roof generating 30% of the required energy.

In Kenya, Swissport works with local cargo communities with projects including the Flower Corridor initiative, creating a highly efficient and secure supply chain for fresh cut flowers from farms to end customers.

Dirk Goovaerts, Head of Swissport Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Global Cargo Chair said that the company has ambitious plans for Kenya, saying: “I have full confidence in the service excellence and dedication of our team in Kenya and beyond, and I look forward to celebrating the next round anniversaries of their successful operation.”
