Three more US carriers, namely United, Hawaiian Airlines and Allegiant Airlines, have joined an existing seven carriers in confirming that restrictions will apply to smart luggage that contain fixed, non-removable lithium batteries.
It is understood that such restrictions will come into effect on January 15.
Although certain smart bag models have a facility whereby batteries may be detached, those with batteries in situ will not be allowed in the hold for safety reasons. Assuming their size and weight does not contravene the carrier's carry-on policy, then they may be transported in the cabin. That said, there are certain models where batteries cannot be removed and these will not be permitted on flights for many carriers, whether in the cabin or the hold.
Last month Delta, American, Southwest and Alaska Airlines all announced similar restrictions, in line with other major carriers including BA, Qantas and Air Canada.
