Norwegian invests in greener ULDs

Low cost airline Norwegian is introducing new, lighter and stronger containers on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The new Zodiac AirCargo containers will offer increased protection for passengers’ checked luggage on the airline’s low cost long-haul flights. According to a recent SITA report, mishandled bags and damaged luggage cost the sector around US$2.3bn annually: that's the equivalent of 6.5 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers.

Norwegian believes that the new containers will help to reduce that frequency; and the durable, state-of-the-art Herculight S Endumax containers by Zodiac Aerospace will also make a positive contribution to the carrier's environmental footprint. Weighing just 51 kilogrammes each, which is at least 37% less than traditional containers, these new ULDs will help to reduce fuel burn on Norwegian’s fleet of B787 Dreamliners.
