New regional cargo hub to emerge in northeast China

In the first step towards developing Shenyang Taoxian International airport as a major cargo hub in northeast China, the airport owner, Liaoning Airport Management Group, has entered into a Strategic Co-operation Framework Agreement with HACTL Development Holdings.

Shenyang airport currently has one runway and one cargo terminal: a joint venture between the airport, China Southern Airlines and Sinotrans. Last year, the airport saw a cargo throughput of 142,000 tonnes; an increase of 2.7% from 2014 figures.

Shenyang is served by China Southern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Spring Airlines, which have established their hubs here, while China Postal Airlines and SF Airlines operate scheduled freighter services.

The Agreement was signed by Liaoning Airport Management Group Chairman, Wang De Jia, and HDHL Managing Director, Tony Cho, following a visit to Hactl’s showcase SuperTerminal 1 facility in Hong Kong. Shenyang airport is understood to be targeting the development of cool chain and pharmaceuticals traffic – a sector with which Hactl has considerable experience, as Hong Kong’s first accredited GDP handler – however any specific plans are yet to be drawn up.

Going forward from the agreement, Shenyang airport will initially perform market analysis, going on to carry out any facility developments over the coming years. HDHL is expected to fulfil a consultancy role, and offer advice relating to design, construction and operation of new facilities.
