Finnair Cargo readies for its new cargo hub in Helsinki

Cargo Matters
Finnair Cargo has selected HUB logistics as its terminal operator in an operation due to commence in December.

Finnair Cargo is scheduled to open its new, state-of-the-art, 37,000 square metre COOL Nordic Cargo hub at Helsinki airport in May 2017, and to that end will be working with HUB logistics to ensure a smooth transition. The transition from the current terminal operator, Suomen Transval, will be carried out as a transfer of business, which means that the Transval employees working in the Finnair Cargo terminal at Helsinki airport will transfer to HUB logistics.

"Cargo is an integral part of Finnair's growth strategy and we intend to make the most of the warehouse automation and process optimisation capabilities of our new terminal,” reveals Janne Tarvainen, Managing Director of Finnair Cargo. “This important step is now a great opportunity for us to significantly increase the volumes of cargo at our Helsinki hub."

Finnair's new Airbus A350 fleet is expected to bring up to 50% more cargo capacity by 2020 and the carrier has already invested €80m in building the new cargo terminal at the airport, with special cargo handling areas for both pharmaceutical and life science products, as well as perishable products, which includes fish and seafood. The much anticipated terminal will have a high level of warehouse automation to ensure a good quality air freight service, together with competitive handling costs.
