easyJet to fit aircraft with wheelchair accessible toilets

PRM Update
In May, easyJet announced plans to fit all its new A320 aircraft with Space-Flex 2 lavatories, a wheelchair accessible toilet.

Only Airbus offers this feature on single aisle aircraft, a feature that will be installed on all new A320s as of May 2016. At the same time, the airline announced intentions to fit its existing 76-strong fleet of A320s with the Space-Flex 2 lavatory, which it hopes will be completed by 2018.

The Space-Flex 2 lavatory allows two A320-sized toilets to merge into one enlarged cubicle via a simple conversion process. Reallocating the two toilets at the rear of the aircraft has the added benefit of allowing for six extra seats without compromising on space and permits an enlarged galley area, accommodating up to eight half-size trolleys. The enlarged galley in turn facilitates speedier turnarounds by providing sufficient space to store trays to serve both the outward and return flight, eliminating the need to restock supplies.

The budget airline is actually the second European operator to invest in redesigned cabin interior featuring wheelchair accessible toilets. In March 2014, Spanish low cost carrier Vueling became the first European airline to receive an Airbus A320 fitted with the Space-Flex lavatory.
