This recent downslide ceased in September, however, when the airport reached 368,000 tonnes of cargo, equating to a 1% year-over-year increase in cargo volumes for the month.
A 3% surge in September exports y-o-y was predominantly responsible for the modest increase, while monthly imports remained flat and trans-shipments fell by 3%, compared to the previous September. North America and the Australasian region experienced the greatest increase in HKIA exports.
In terms of overall figures for January 2015 to date, Hong Kong airport handled 3.2m tonnes of cargo in the first nine months of the year, representing a 0.2% increase over the same period last year. On a 12-month basis, including spikes in cargo figures relating to the US West Coast port crisis, cargo volumes at HKIA grew by 1.3%, year-over-year, and totalled 4.4m tonnes.
