Biofuel provision at Oslo

Green Scene
In what has been considered a first for commercial aviation Air BP, together with Norwegian airport operator Avinor and biofuel specialist SkyNRG, has announced the results of a successful collaboration for the commercial supply of jet biofuel at Oslo’s Gardermoen airport.

All airlines now landing at Oslo airport can benefit from having jet biofuel delivered from the airport’s main fuel farm via the existing hydrant mechanism and Lufthansa became the first airline to confirm that it was to uplift Air BP aviation biofuel at the station.

Other airlines, including SAS and KLM, have also demonstrated their commitment to a lower carbon future by confirming that they will be purchasing jet biofuel at the airport. Air BP anticipates that this will lay the foundations for an increased adoption of a biofuel supply on a worldwide basis. To reach this stage, Air BP worked closely with Avinor and has agreed to provide a minimum of 1.25m litres of jet biofuel. Avinor will also support Air BP in its assessment of the total market demand.

The initiative has been driven by the requirement for the aviation industry to work towards a sustainable low carbon future and this step acknowledges IATA’s aim of achieving carbon neutral growth by 2020, along with a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. Air BP’s biofuel initiative further responds to the EU goal to ensure that 3.5% of total aviation fuel consumption consists of jet biofuel by 2020. Finally, growing consumer awareness for responsible aviation practice further underpins the move towards such a supply.
