American Airlines and Microsoft optimise operations

American Airlines will use Microsoft Azure as its preferred cloud platform to optimise applications and workflows.

Through the partnership, data and digital technologies will be used to meet customer demands and streamline processes, optimising operations using advanced analytics and other digital technologies.

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, American Airlines’ largest hub, the two companies are applying AI, machine learning and data analytics to reduce taxi time, saving time for passengers and thousands of gallons of jet fuel a year for the airline.

Built on Azure, the intelligent gating programme provides real-time analysis of data points including routing and runway information to automatically assign the nearest available gate.

Previously requiring manual involvement from gate planners, the programme looks at multiple data points for daily arrivals and saves more than a minute per flight, adding up to time savings of 10 hours a day.

American Airlines and Microsoft have developed the ConnectMe app for team members who were rarely at a desk but reliant on accessing information from laptops or desktop computers.

Using the Microsoft Power Apps-enabled app in Microsoft Team accessed from a mobile device, turnaround times have been accelerated.

Judson Althoff, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer said: “Through our partnership, American Airlines is taking a forward-thinking, cloud-first approach to using data, AI and our collaboration platforms to reimagine not only its own operations but the experiences of its employees and customers.”
