The carrier hopes that the development will enable the handling of 4.4m tonnes of cargo a year by 2018 compared to the current 1.4m tonnes handled at the airport each year. The airline also hopes to boost the total capacity to as much as 7m tonnes per year with additional expansions in the future.
Head of Qatar Cargo, Ulrich Ogiermann, said that the expansion would put Qatar Airways into another league and serve to enhance the efficiency of operations at Doha, which is still a fairly recent development, having opened in 2014 at a cost of US$1bn.
Speaking on behalf of the carrier, Qatar's CEO Akbar Al Baker said: "Our cargo capability is a major component in driving our group success and growth, and it will remain a focus of our expansion in the coming years."
